Mawwiage is what bwings us togetha today!

As a long time lover of the Princess Bride, it seems only appropriate to dig out that piece of cinematic excellence to watch on the eve of my wedding and that is exactly what Jessie and I plan to do this coming Saturday night. I have forced Jessie (and all of the other superfriends) to watch the Princess Bride countless times over the past 15 years to the point where they had to physically retrain me from quoting every line. It is the BEST story: full of silly humor and jokes, friendship, adventure and true love (which is the greatest thing in the world, besides a nice MLT) – all things that also describe my relationship with Adam. Adam makes me laugh even more than Vizzini and I am so excited to face life’s adventures with him and to be his [princess] bride (and I promise not to try and kill myself when I reach the honeymoon suite!).  Anyway, I guess this is just a round about way of saying EEEEEEE I can’t wait until Sunday!!! Besides watching the Princess Bride and marrying Adam (duh) there are about a bajillion other things I am looking forward to this weekend. I am excited to have all of my friends and family and Adam’s family in one place – and to see everyone mix and mingle. One of my favorite things about the weddings I have been in has been to spend time with my friend’s families and to meet the groom’s family. I can’t wait for Krolls and Wolfs and superfriends to come together! I am excited to see all of the elements of our wedding pulled together to capture the “spring garden” feel that we wanted. Even though it will be too chilly to have the wedding outside, we hope that our wedding brings a taste of springtime to Baltimore. I am excited for what I hope will be a relaxing morning of pampering with the bridesmaids while we get ready for the wedding. I looove to have my hair and make-up done professionally (seriously this is something that’s on the top of my list of things I’d splurge on if I was super wealthy) and I picture us sipping mimosas cool as a cucumber the morning of the wedding (HA – remind me I wrote this on Sunday when I am a ball of nervous anticipation). I am excited for a meaningful ceremony conducted by the same Rabbi who Bat Mitzvahed me at age 13 and finally, I am excited to break it down on the dance floor all night long!!

Baby Watch and Bachelorette!

Helloooooo superfriends! Baby watch 2015 is in full swing over here. My future sis-in-law is due on the 21st but we’re hoping baby comes a little early. I mean, it’s a three day weekend, doesn’t baby know how convenient that would be? Not to mention I’m heading to Miami for Bachelorette part 2: The Cruise on the 22nd and I’d love to be close by when baby comes to see he or she when nice and fresh! I am so excited to be an aunt!

Speaking of Bachelorette part 2: The Cruise, I am SO ridiculously excited!! As Jessie wrote about earlier, my amazing bridesmaids threw me a fantastic bach in Baltimore which was a great chance to celebrate with some of my favorite people who can’t make it to Bachpt2 and some of my favorite people who love me enough to celebrate TWICE! It was such a great night and it was awesome to see how friends from every step of my life got along so well together. Represented were my two different elementary schools (holler Jess and Sarah), middle school (Sash), high school (Linz), college (Jeanette, Jannette, Chel, Anu, Ilana), Kastles (BVP), MBA (Richa) and my new Kroll family (Dorina). I am so lucky to have developed these amazing friendships and am loving the fun times my girls are showing me before I become a boring old married woman (JK THOUGH RIGHT?).

Though we (the superfriends) have traveled together for Sasha’s bachelorette in Austin and to Rehoboth for Lindsay’s bachelorette, I feel like we haven’t really gone on a trip trip together since Vegas back in August of 2010. Here we are a solid 4.5 years later and I am ready for another AMAZING trip with my best friends. There are 11 of us going on the cruise (superfriends + Maryland friends + Kastles friends) which is crazy awesome and I am SO ready to soak up some rays with these girls. I know the warm weather will be incredible, but the quality time together will be even better. I have only been on cruises with my mom (which were great – love you mom!), and I am extra excited to experience them with a group of friends. I imaging us laying by the pool, enjoying frozen drinks, dancing our butts off and maybe even partaking in some karaoke. In honor of this upcoming vacay, I’m posting some oh my favorite photos from our Vegas trip – where we ate, drank, danced, explored and maybe even gambled a little. Can’t wait to do it up with guys again!!

Abby’s 2014 Year in Review

Happy December my loves! Another year is almost in the books and we recently passed our one year blogiversary (congratulations to us on 88 posts over the past 14 months). Well, we are another year older and another year wiser and another year closer to being lifelong friends. This year has been full of highs and lows: we’ve seen divorce and separation, loneliness and the loss of loved ones, illness and breakups. But we’ve also seen the birth of new nieces, weddings and celebrations, the beginnings of fantastic new relationships, amazing trips and cross-country moves. I want to take a moment to thank all of you superfriends and all of you anonymous readers in the blogosphere for your love and support over the past year. And now, because it’s a little more fun to talk about the highs than the lows, I want to recap my top 6 moments of 2014!

1. Adopting Jack

We adopted our furry little bundle of joy last January and he is far and above the highlight of my year. JUST LOOK AT THAT FACE! Jack has brought so much joy into our lives it’s ridiculous. Having a dog is lot of work, but every time he greets me with just endless excitement it makes it all so worth it!

2. Engagement Party

Adam and I have had so many amazing times together this year and have had a ton of fun planning for our upcoming wedding, but I think the engagement party his parents threw for us in March takes the cake. Most of you superfriends were there which just added to the specialness of the event and I loved having so many friends and family on hand to celebrate with us. I also loved how it felt like I was being welcomed into the Kroll family with open arms – I can’t imagine a better family to be marrying into.

3. Hamptons Winery Trip

In June I traveled up to New York to spend the weekend with three incredible girls I worked with at the Kastles back in 2011 – we have stayed close friends ever since and our constant group texting allows us to keep in touch even when we’re not together. Jessie also joined us since she lives in New York and we all had an amazing day at wineries in the Hamptons (thanks to Artie for driving us around all day).

4. Graduation

In may I graduated from business school with my MBA. It was a pretty special moment and the culmination of two years of hard work! To get some additional insight into what I learned at b-school and my passion for marketing, check out my other blog – Brand Loyalist!

5. Lindsay’s Wedding

There’s nothing more special than getting to see your best friend marry the love of her life. Lindsay’s wedding was beautiful, emotional and so much fun. The ceremony was so special and I loved spending the weekend with Lindsay’s and Stephen’s families and with all of the superfriends. I think the absolute highlight was closing out the reception with a big dance party to Shake it Off. Sasha and Lindsay – you have set the bar HIGH for superfriends weddings and I hope mine can live up to it. 🙂

6. Thanksgiving in South Carolina

Since I’m not working and had some extra time on my hands, I went down to South Carolina with my mom for the whole week of Thanksgiving. It was really great to spend some quality one-on-one time with my mom in addition to all of the warm happiness that comes from spending the holiday with my extended family. Since most of my mom’s fam is in South Carolina we usually only see them once a year which makes Thanksgiving extra special. My mom and I rocked our matching dresses, enjoyed amazing food cooked by my Aunts Diane and Julie and had a blast on our traditional post-dinner walk to the park. We also took a private yoga class taught by my cousin, Rachel, and visited my Aunt Becky’s farm, met her donkey, sheep and miniature horses in addition to having delicious fresh egg salad from her chickens and lettuce from her garden.

I can’t to see what next year brings (marrying Adam!!!!) and still have much to look forward to as 2014 wraps up with more quality time with the superfriends. What were your top moments of 2014??

Abby’s Maid of Honor Speech

Wow. My last post was May 30th?

We have some catching up to do.

I’ve done a lot of things since May 30th, but the best thing by far was getting married.

It was absolutely the best day of my life. I laughed a lot. I cried even more than I laughed. And I loved even more than I cried. I never knew my heart could feel so full.

It was a day filled with hundreds of happy memories, but there’s just one I want to focus on today.

Our wedding photographer sent me a link to our pictures last week, and I laughed out loud at the photos taken during Abby’s speech. She took me through a full range of emotions. If We Were Having Coffee Today

Happy Friday, ladies!

I’m writing to you from Starbucks this morning, as the internet at home keeps dropping on me. It’s such a tragedy when that happens. I have to buy myself fancy coffee and engage with pleasant baristas. The horror.

Starbucks always makes me think of you lovely girls and our many hours of good conversation at Main Street and Pan Am. In honor of that, I thought it would be fun to host a virtual coffee date today. This is an idea I’ve seen on a few other blogs, so don’t go thinking I’m really creative and original.

Let’s begin!

If we were having coffee today, I’d ask for your opinion on tile. Stephen and I are remodeling part of our master bath (we had the tub removed and we’re building a bigger, frame-less glass shower), and we need to pick out tile for the shower walls and floor this weekend. The bathroom floor tile is beige, and the walls are painted a medium brown, so we’re thinking of using grey and grey/blue tiles in the shower. We’ll see what we can find! Oh, and we’re not doing this ourselves, in case my second sentence was misleading. We’re working with a contractor/handyman named Van (heh, Van the Handyman, I love that) who helped us with some electrical work right after we bought the house. I may like to craft and paint, but plumbing and tile work is a little beyond me.

If we were having coffee today, I’d tell you that this year is passing quickly and slowly at the same time. On one hand, my brain thinks, “It’s already June?!?” And on the other hand, I keep thinking “I should address our invites tonight” only to remember that we don’t actually need to mail them until late July or August. Late summer and fall are going to be such a busy time for us, and I am simultaneously impatient, excited and nervous as hell.

If we were having coffee today, I’d gush about my puppy. Renley is nearly 2 years old; can I still call him a puppy? I swear, my love for him grows every single day. Lately he’s been joining us in bed for cuddle time when Stephen tucks me in at night. He is so gentle these days, and it makes my heart melt when he calmly lays between us and stares at me with those honey brown eyes. I can’t believe I am sharing this with the Internet, but I can make myself cry on the spot when I think about Renley five years from now. I have this vision in which Stephen and I are playing with our kids (God willing) one evening, and I make eye contact with Renley. And in his brown eyes, now surrounded by a few white hairs, he seems to say “I knew you guys when you were just a couple.” I have a lump in my throat just typing that. And now you think I am crazy.

If we were having coffee today, I’d tell you about the peppercorn-crusted burgers I made for dinner last night. Stephen raved and raved. I have to agree, they were pretty fantastic. Hah, allow me to obnoxiously toot my own horn. I wish we all still lived within 10 miles of one another, because it would be so fun to have you over for monthly dinner parties. In other recipe news, I also ate like five Earth Bowl salads this week. Have you all ever tried Sweetgreen? It’s a salad and froyo chain in DC, but they’ve expanded to a few more cities. Their Earth Bowl contains arugula, raw corn, cherry tomatoes, chicken, white cheddar, spicy roasted broccoli, grains (quinoa and brown rice, I think) and pesto vinaigrette. It’s amazing. Since Sweetgreen has yet to reach Austin, we have to make our own to get our fix. It’s sort of a pain to prep everything, but the end result is well worth it.

If we were having coffee today, I would ask you for a life update, because no one likes to sip coffee with a conversation hog. So, give me some scoop! What’s new with my favorite five?

Spring Breeeeaaaaak!

Okay, the term Spring Break definitely loses its luster once you are part of the working world. I am off school this week, but since I started working for the Kastles again, I was commuting to DC Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It didn’t help the spring break feeling at all when we got a few inches of snow Sunday night into Monday. Now it’s Friday, I’m off work and its finally a little warmer – things are looking up!

Can’t forget last weekend though which was spectacular in a number of ways:

1. Quality time with Adam’s family. Much of Adam’s extended family flew into town last weekend for our engagement party. Since many of them got in on Friday and the party wasn’t until Sunday, we had a little family dinner Friday night. Family dinner at the Kroll’s isn’t complete without plenty of wine and cocktails and a yummy snack spread with cheeses, hummus, celery and olives. Adam’s family is so fun and we had a great time!

2. I said yes to the dress!!!!! Saturday morning I went wedding dress shopping with my mom, Adam’s mom, Jessie and Jeanette. The first place we went had an interesting layout where your entourage was actually in the fitting room with you. This means Adam’s mom saw way more than she bargained for! I wasn’t super comfortable standing around in my skivvies, but it was still a fun experience. I tried on so many gorgeous dresses, but didn’t feel like any of them were the “ONE”. Our second appointment of the day was at a bridal salon that Carrie and Jeanette took me to the weekend before. The second wedding dress I ever put on made me tear up a little and after trying a bunch of others I knew I had to go back to that one! My mom loved it too and best part is it looks great with my veil! I’ll be wearing the same veil my mom wore at her wedding – it is in great condition even 30+ years later and I think it is a great nod to my mom and how awesome she is. I can’t say much more about the dress on this public forum, but the super friends have all already seen a picture of it!

3. Abby and Jessie’s weekend of fun! Jessie came for wedding dress shopping and stayed for the weekend and it was so fun to spend time together. Saturday night we went to dinner with Adam and had mouthwateringly delicious mussels and pizza. Saturday night we had wine and played Heads Up for hours – I swear that game makes me laugh soooo hard! I even persuaded Jessie to set up a JDate Profile. I know her Jewish Prince Charming is just around the corner 🙂

4. Blowouts! Sunday morning Jessie and I drove to Bethesda for appointments at Dry Bar to get our hair blown out. We grabbed coffee first and it was so nice to sit and relax and be pampered. We left feeling relaxed and with gorgeous curls! We felt a little cheated though because they didn’t offer us mimosas – apparently they do in NYC?!

5. Engagement Party!! Adam’s parents threw us an amazing engagement party at their house and so many friends and family came out to it. We munched on yummy passed apps and it was great to catch up with everyone – especially four out of five super friends! We had a blast but wow it is tiring to talk to everyone and greet every guest – I think we got a preview of what the wedding is going to be like. I feel like I barely saw Adam so on wedding day we’re definitely going to have to tag team it and talk to everyone as a couple just so we get more time together! Of course, me being me, we had to take a bunch of photos and I must say we look adorable!

What I’m Looking Forward to in 2014

Hey ladies!

I hope everyone is having a fantastic Wednesday. HUMP DAY! wOOt wOOt!

Today I am posting because Jessie bullied me into it. Not that I don’t love sharing with you all, but today’s post is definitely all thanks to Jessie.

What to talk about? How about the year ahead?

One of the things I look forward to every December is buying a new calendar for the next year. Oh yes, I’m a nerd. I love me some paper and organization.

2014 is going to be a seriously busy year for me, and I’m so psyched it has officially begun! What’s on deck?

January– We have a few more days to spend with family and friends in Virginia before we hit the road back to Texas. I’m really starting to miss our house and friends in Austin, and I’m itchy to get back! If only 23 hours in the car didn’t stand in the way.

February– I have a work event in early February and Stephen’s brother Aaron and his girlfriend are coming to visit us over Valentine’s Day weekend.

March– We’re making a quick weekend trip back to Maryland for Abby and Adam’s engagement party and a tasting at our wedding venue. I am pretty sure the tasting is going to be my favorite part of wedding planning 🙂

April– Avon Walk #5 in Houston with my Aunt Nancy!

May– Zach and Katie are coming to visit us in Austin for a Spartan Race and a week-long work-from-home-party. We had our first work-from-home party in 2013, and it worked out really nicely! We get lots of time together (in the evenings and mornings), and no one has to use up vacation days.

June & July– Nothing on the books yet, but I think we’ll be in Texas the entire time. That alone is pretty exciting to me considering the rest of the year is quite travel-filled.

August– My brother David and Kristy are getting married in Philadelphia on the 16th. Stephen and I are both in their wedding party (and they’re in ours), and we’re extremely excited to celebrate their big day! At the end of August (Labor Day weekend), we’ll hit the road to Virginia again. There will be a lot of final wedding items to take care of that require our physical presence (dress fittings, venue walk-though, etc.).

September– The first weekend in September will be a big celebration: my bridal shower, bachelorette party and birthday all rolled together! I like efficiency. Mid-month, we’ll fly out to Oregon for Jeannette and Justin’s wedding in Eugene and a quick visit with Matt and Whitney in Portland.

October– Wedding (!!) and honeymoon in Peru (!!!).

November & December– I haven’t really thought past our wedding, but lots of fun events typically occur in these months. Ahem, Christmas Eve Eve dinner.

So, that’s my life for the next 12 months. What’s on tap for your 2014?

Christmas Eve Eve 2013 – now with more pictures!

As you may have already read in Jessie’s recap post, Christmas Eve Eve, one of my favorite nights of the year, has come and gone! Jessie covered all the awesome details so I will try not to repeat anything, but figured I should chime in and post some pics from the night. As always it was an amazing evening and it was wonderful to catch up and hear stories about what has been going on in everyone’s lives. Even though we do a fairly good job of staying in touch year round, there are some stories that just HAVE to be told in person and we were dying laughing at some points of the evening.

This Christmas get together was extra special for me because before dinner I asked each of the superfriends to be my bridesmaids! To ask them, I made them each a collage on shutterfly with photos of the two of us. It’s easy to see why we all became friends in elementary school, middle school and high school: we saw each other every day, were in the same classes and participated in similar extracurriculars. The fact that we are still such good friends nine years later despite going to six different colleges and living in five different states (and Germany!) is truly a testament to how amazing these girls are. I cannot wait to have them by my side on my wedding day!!!

I will also have one other bridesmaid, Carrie, who was my little in the co-ed frat I was part of in college. Carrie is thoughtful, hilarious and can break it down on the dance floor. I will also have co-maids of honor: Jessie and Jeanette. Jeanette was my random roommate my freshman year of college and we liked each other so much that we lived together for seven more years. When I moved out of the apartment I lived in with Jeanette to move in with Adam it really was the end of an era!

The day after Christmas we got together again for lunch with Sasha since she had to miss the Christmas Eve Eve gathering. We went to Sunflower, our favorite vegetarian restaurant, and chowed down on soy General Tso’s “chicken” while exchanging gifts and catching up. Christmas may have come and gone but we still have New Year’s Eve to look forward to – can’t wait!

The Proposal

And I’m not talking about the amazing Sandra Bullock movie! I figured it is time to spill the dirt on Adam’s proposal in detail to all you superfriends! Let’s start at the beginning…a few weeks ago, Adam asked me if I wanted to go to the zoo since it had reopened after being closed during the government shutdown. Adam and I first went to the zoo together our sophomore year of college after watching all of the BBC Planet Earth series and we have been going to the zoo at least a couple times a year since then so this wasn’t a totally unusual request, but I did have a little hunch that this could be the proposal site! We set a zoo date for Sunday, October 27.

The morning of the 27th, we drove down to DC for brunch at Old Ebbitt Grill with my mom and my cousin Sarah along with my cousin Meredith and her friend Amy who were visiting from South Carolina. We had a great meal and a lot of fun chatting with my family which Adam said helped him relax a little. After brunch wrapped up we got in the car and headed to the zoo.

As soon as we got into the zoo I got super nervous! Like I said, I had a hunch the proposal was coming and all of a sudden all I could think about was where it would happen and what he would say and how I would react. We headed on our usual path toward the sloth bears. The sloth bear was nowhere to be found and we moseyed on down to the otters. Between the two exhibits there was a fairly secluded path surrounded by trees and lush greenery, it was there that Adam put his arm around me and told me how much he loved me, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was an amazing moment and it felt like we were the only people in the whole zoo. We weren’t though because after I gushed “Yes, of course!!” Adam pointed out a secret photographer who had been capturing the whole proposal!

Adam was so thoughtful to get the photographer since he knows how important pictures are to me (I am known among the superfriends to always have my camera and they count on me to snap pics of our group!). After our special proposal, we got to walk around and take more pictures around the zoo. I promise to pass them along once we get the full set.

It was an absolutely perfect day and the celebrations didn’t stop after the zoo – Adam had dinner reservations at The Black Olive in Baltimore, site of one of our first fancy dates together back in 2010 – the date where he first called me his girlfriend! Champagne was waiting at our table and we spent the evening in just-engaged bliss while dining on grilled octopus salad, lamb, scallops and shrimp. So delicious!

It was a day I will always remember and Adam did an amazing job planning the perfect proposal at the zoo, a place that has always been special to us. I can’t get over how lucky I am to have Adam in my life as we have gone from great friends to boyfriend and girlfriend and someday to husband and wife!! ❤
